Nasal salt gland in dinosaurs. - Acta Paleont.Polonica, 25, 2, 205-215, June, 1979.Large, herbivorous dinosaurs display, as a rule, enlarged external nostrils. It isconsidered here, that they accomodated large functioning salt gland homologouswith the lateral nasal gland of Recent reptiles and birds. All dinosaurs wereprobably uricotelic animals which had to use the extrarenal way of excretingexcess of monovalent ions. It is suggested here that they were able to use thenasal salt gland for this purpose. Its presence may have been especially importantfor unloading the excess of potassium Ions Ingested by large herbivores withtheir vegetarian food, orland for getting rid of sodium Ions - by herbivoresliving In saline environment. An alternative is also given, that the developmentof large functioning salt gland may have been exclusively a result of large bodysize and conseque...
