Recentsystem design, application, and technology trends that requiremore capacity, bandwidth, efficiency, and predictability out ofthe memory system make it an even more important systembottleneck. At the same time, DRAM technology is experiencingdifficult technology scaling challenges that make the maintenanceand enhancement of its capacity, energy-efficiency, and reliabilitysignificantly more costly with conventional techniques.In this paper, after describing the demands and challengesfaced by the memory system, we examine some promisingresearch and design directions to overcome challenges posedby memory scaling.
